COVID-19 Planning and Updates

In response to the COVID-19 global health pandemic, Radford University put measures in place to protect and promote the health, safety, and well-being of the campus and the community.  As such, campus has looked and operated differently depending upon the semester. We have been successful in navigating the pandemic over the last two years, providing in-person instruction, opportunities for our students to engage and receive services on campus and maintaining a commitment to the health and safety of the Highlander family.  Although COVID-19 persists as an illness impacting many, through an endemic phase it will become managed similarly to the flu and/or other illnesses that can, at times, be prevalent.

This website was developed and continues to be updated in order to share important information with the campus and the community related to the pandemic status, campus impacts and progress.  This site houses detailed information about campus operations and services, as well as expectations of all Highlanders.

There has not been a perfect plan, ideal situation, or one-size-fits-all solution.  However, we have worked diligently and thought proactively about what would work best for our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.  During Spring 2022, the University enjoyed a return to many campus practices and existing policies.  Through the summer, remaining approaches were relaxed and/or discontinued.  This will continue as the start of the Fall 2022 semester is days away.  With a continued focus on the health and well-being of students, faculty, staff and other partners it is important to remember the following:

  • Anyone that is not feeling well should stay home and not return to campus until symptoms are resolving or a negative COVID-19 test is received or cleared by a healthcare provider.
  • The COVID-19 Symptom Tracker was discontinued July 15, 2022 and is no longer available to assist in monitoring one’s health.
  • The clear shields attached to podiums in classrooms and some service areas will remain in place.
  • The University’s COVID-19 Dashboard was last updated on May 10, 2022 and will be archived on August 12, 2022. Dashboard updates will not resume as the fall semester begins.
  • The University’s Frequently Asked Questions will continue to offer consistent information and direct individuals to additional resources.
  • Indoor masking remains optional with the exception of clinical areas such as Student Health Services where masking is required.  Clinical areas where masking is required will be clearly marked with signage.
  • A “mask friendly” approach will be maintained, both supporting and respecting the choice of a person that chooses to wear a mask and the same for a person that chooses not to wear a mask.
  • Radford University Carilion (RUC), Roanoke Higher Education Center (RHEC) and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (Abingdon) follow guidance provided by the agencies where the site is located.
  • Vaccination remains the best way to prevent and/or minimize illness. Vaccines and boosters are able to be located through the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).  Students seeking a COVID-19 vaccination or booster may also talk to Student Health Services or the Nurse Navigator (RUC). Student Health Services and the Nurse Navigator (RUC) are also able to assist students with flu shots and other vaccinations that may be sought.
  • A symptomatic student should contact Student Health Services or the Nurse Navigator (RUC) to see a healthcare provider and/or receive a COVID-19 test.
  • Faculty, staff and contractors can locate a free COVID-19 test by using the VDH website. This VDH website offers testing site locations and support on obtaining at-home tests.  If an employee is not able to secure COVID-19 testing, Human Resources can be contacted for additional guidance.
  • A person that has tested positive for COVID-19 should isolate for at least five (5) days.
  • The VDH’s Isolation and Quarantine Calculator can assist in determining the exact period of time for isolation.
  • A student that has tested positive for COVID-19 and needs assistance navigating isolation or an absence notification should contact the Dean of Students Office. This is the same guidance for a student exposed to COVID-19 or recovering from another illness.
  • The University no longer provides isolation/quarantine housing for students living in residence halls. Students are encouraged to talk with families and roommates to develop a plan should either or both roommates develop a confirmed case of COVID-19.
  • Guidance for a person that may be a close contact of a person that has tested positive for COVID-19 is dependent upon vaccination status. VDH’s Isolation and Quarantine Calculator is able to assist.

The COVID-19 Workgroup will remain in close contact with the New River Health District of the VDH, monitor new variants and guidance from the CDC, Commonwealth of Virginia and other agencies. Adjustments will be made if necessary or appropriate to support the health and safety of our community. Know that we remain committed to working through challenges and opportunities together!
