Radford University announces Commencement changes and future plans
Commencement is a wonderful time to reflect on the important mission of Radford University and celebrate the incredible work of individual Highlanders. It is truly one of the most special times of year for our campus and our community. However, due to the COVID-19 global health pandemic, as well as gathering limitations mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the University is announcing Commencement changes and future plans to celebrate the Class of 2020, including spring, summer, and fall graduates.
All undergraduate and graduate ceremonies for the Class of 2020 at both main campus and Radford University Carilion, as well as related events, will be held from Thursday, April 29, 2021 through Sunday, May 2, 2021. Commencement details, including a schedule of events with ceremony dates, times, and locations, will be posted on the University’s website by March 1, 2021.
This difficult, but necessary, decision was made in order to place the health, safety, and well-being of our graduates, their families, and our community first and foremost. It was also made in order to ensure compliance with the capacity limitations for gatherings, including indoor venues, by the Commonwealth of Virginia. For example, the combined ceremonies would have attracted an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 guests to our region. The Spring 2021 events will provide an opportunity for a variety of outdoor venues, which are being recommended by public health officials, but not possible in the late fall due to possible cold weather and related conditions.
As a Radford family, we look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2020, which has overcome adversity and experienced success at an unprecedented time for our campus, our country, and the world. In the Spring of 2021, we look forward to welcoming these Highlanders and their families back home for this long awaited and much deserved recognition!
