Preventative Measures and Actions for Campus Community

Prevention measures are similar to those used against the common cold and flu, which are currently circulating in high numbers in Virginia.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) always recommends everyday preventative actions.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then throw the tissue in the trash. Then, disinfect hands.
  • Wash hands frequently.
  • Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Please note that face masks are most useful for preventing disease spread when they are worn by people who have symptoms. This is why people are asked to wear a mask at doctors’ offices and hospitals if they are coughing or sneezing.

The flu shot is the best way to protect from getting the flu.  Practicing good hygiene is also important.  It is not too late to get a flu shot to benefit from it.  Students may still receive the vaccine at the Student Health Center.  Other members of the campus community should contact their primary care physician or visit local pharmacies with on-site flu vaccinations.
