Message to Students, Faculty, and Staff from President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.

Monitoring the Coronavirus Radford University

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

As each and every member of the Radford family remains heavily focused on the health, well-being, and safety of ourselves, our loved ones, and our local communities, I am reaching out to share an informational update regarding the growing impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic on the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of today (March 18, 2020), the Commonwealth has a total of 77 confirmed cases. At this time, there are no confirmed cases in Southwest Virginia.

In order to limit the overall number of cases and possible spread in communities to the greatest extent possible, Governor Northam has strongly urged all Virginians to avoid non-essential gatherings of more than 10 people. As noted by the Governor’s Office, this does not apply to normal operations of essential services, such as manufacturers, distribution centers, airports, bus and train stations, medical facilities, grocery stores, or pharmacies. As a result of the Governor’s action, the University has adjusted the prior limit of people at a gathering from 75 to 10.

Additionally, in partnership with State Health Commissioner Norman Oliver, Governor Northam has increased social distancing through the issuance of a public health emergency order prohibiting more than 10 patrons in all settings, including restaurants, fitness centers, and theaters. The order, which mirrors a recent federal guideline, gives local and state law enforcement the ability to enforce this ban.

This continues to be a very uncertain time for our University and our society. New information is emerging on a regular basis. Please know that the University continues to review and adjust the ways in which we engage with the campus community and the general public.

As such, all Radford University students, faculty, and staff should have their University-issued identification card with them at all times, while on campus grounds and in campus facilities. This will allow the University to continue providing access for individuals who are on campus in their official capacities for business purposes.

Without question, we remain committed to providing continued updates and answering any and all questions. The University is diligently working on future plans. We anticipate making additional announcements very soon. In the interim, we ask for your engagement, patience, and understanding as classes and services transition to digital platforms in the coming week. Please continue to take care of yourselves and each other!

Sincerely,

Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.
