Dalton Eminent Scholar Award
The Dalton Eminent Senior Scholar and Rising Star Awards serve to recognize faculty members with a distinguished national and/or international reputation in their disciplines. Dalton Scholars serve a two-year term which includes $10,000 award each year (for a total of a $20,000 award over two years) and expectations for public engagements during their tenure.
Eligibility for Senior Scholars
Up to three Dalton Eminent Senior Scholar awards will be named each year. Recipients of the Dalton Eminent Senior Scholar Award must be Radford University Associate or Full Professors with service in the rank at Radford University for a minimum of three academic years. Awardees may be considered for this award again after at least three years from the conclusion of the previous award.
Eligibility for Rising Stars
Up to one award each year is reserved for a Dalton Eminent Scholar Rising Star. A nominee in the Rising Star category must be:
- In no more than their sixth year of continuous service as a full-time faculty member at a higher education institution.
- In at least their third year of continuous faculty service at Radford University.
The Rising Star designation recognizes a faculty member showing extraordinary promise for a career of excellence with research or creative scholarship in the recipient’s discipline. Faculty members are only eligible to receive the Rising Star designation once.
Procedures for Nomination and Selection
To nominate a colleague for the Dalton Eminent Scholar Award, please complete the nomination link at the bottom of this page. The nomination letter should provide clear and compelling evidence of the faculty member’s superior accomplishments and lasting contributions in research or creative scholarship in the member’s discipline aligned with Boyer’s (1990) Scholarship Reconsidered. A nominating colleague does not need to be affiliated with Radford University.

Nominations should be submitted via the submission form at the bottom of this page by 5 p.m. on December 9, 2024.
Nominees will be notified and asked to submit materials if they wish to be considered for a Dalton Eminent Scholar award.
Nomination Package
The nomination package for a candidate should include:
- Nomination letter
- Up to three additional one-page letters of support addressing the faculty member’s merit for the Dalton Eminent Scholar Award based on the Boyer’s (1990) Scholarship Reconsidered
- Faculty member’s current curriculum vitae
Review Process
In keeping with the intention of the Dalton gift, the Dalton nominees will be reviewed based on the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award criteria aligned to the Boyer (1990) Scholarship Reconsidered. These are: teaching, discovery, integration of knowledge and service. The nomination is considered through a confidential process.
Nominees will be recommended to President, Bret Danilowicz, Ph.D.
